Rally to Restore Human Dignity at the Nassau Jail
11 a.m., Nov. 28
Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building
1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, NY

Dear friend,

Roy Nordstrom visited the infirmary at the Nassau County jail complaining of chest pains. A nurse gave him Tylenol and sent him to his cell. Hours later, he died of a heart attack.

Nordstrom's death illustrates a disturbing problem: The county jail is failing in its moral and constitutional obligations to provide adequate medical care and mental-health services to the people housed there.

Since 2010, four inmates have committed suicide at the jail. Meanwhile, the number of complaints we receive from inmates and their families about inadequate medical and mental-health services has skyrocketed.

County officials have turned a blind eye to the problem. Let's shake them up: Tell County Executive Edward Mangano and Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt to meet their moral and constitutional duties to improve conditions at the jail.

An easy first step is to restore the Board of Visitors - an oversight commitee charged with responding to inmate grievances and recommending ways to improve the care and treatment of inmates.

Though mandated by the County Charter, the committee has never fully operated since it was established in 1990. The volunteer committee would consist of seven county residents who are knowledgeable of the correctional system. There is no shortage of individuals willing to take on this important work.

Send County Executive Mangano and Legislator Schmitt a clear message: Improve conditions at the county jail. People's lives depend on it.

And join the NYCLU and our allies at 11 a.m. on Monday Nov. 28 in Mineola as we rally outside the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building (1550 Franklin Ave.) before the next County Legislature meeting. We'll call on legislators to restore the Board of Visitors. Lend your voice to this worthy cause.

Thank you for all that you do,

Samantha Fredrickson, Esq.
