Prison Visits

It was with disbelief and dismay that I learned that Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi has eliminated Saturday visits and reduced the days and hours of visits at the Nassau County Correctional Center.

Most people who are confined in the Nassau Jail have not been convicted of any crime. Many are being held only because they cannot afford bail.When a loved one is arrested and sent to jail, family members are also punished. Families are intimidated by a system that treats them as criminals, and is unresponsive to their needs. Many are frightened, confused and unable to advocate for themselves. Too often prison families are looked upon as part of the problem, rather than as a viable solution With a stroke of the pen, the politicians in Nassau County, again, disregard the suffering of a vulnerable constituency. Do they think that we do not vote?Depriving a parent, spouse or child of an opportunity to visit is not cost effective.It is well documented that maintaining strong family ties is one of the most effective vehicles for successful re entry. We worked so hard to get this implemented and with a stroke of the pen, the politicians in Nassau County, again, disregard the suffering of a vulnerable constituency, Do they think that we do not vote?
