CONGRESSMAN GARY ACKERMAN JOINED Ll CITIZENS
AT A PEACE VIGIL YESTERDAY
On THE 5TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR IN IRAQ
Congressman Gary Ackerman (CD 5) joined more than 200 Long Islanders yesterday at a Peace
Vigil that marked the 5th Anniversary of the War in Iraq. Despite the rain, citizens came out to call for an end
to the war and the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
“The Peace Vigil was a visible demonstration of strong majority
support on Long Island and around the nation for an end to the war and for bringing our soldiers home as quickly as possible,”
said Margaret Melkonian, LI Alliance Co Director. “It was extremely important that Rep. Gary Ackerman joined us today.
He is the first LI representative to stand with us against the war,” said Melkonian.
Representative Ackerman, Bishop, Israel and McCarthy
voted against funding the war in the last “emergency” request from the Administration. We are urging them to vote
against more funding of $102.5 Billion for the war if it comes to the floor this session,” said Melkonian.
The March 19th Peace Vigil in Garden
City on Old Country Road was only one of over 600 hundred around the country coordinated by United for Peace and Justice (www.unitedforpeace.org)
and others that took place on Long Island in Huntington, Patchogue, Commack, Shirley and Valley Stream.
The Peace Vigil was sponsored by: LI Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives:
MoveOn Queens/Nassau; Great Neck Peace Action; Pax Christi LI; The Interfaith Alliance, LI Chapter; Code Pink LI; Veterans
for Peace LI; The Five Towns Forum; and the Social Justice Committee of the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock.
